Van Zandt-Guinn is located just east of I-35W at the western edge of the historic Terrell Heights neighborhood.

The school opened in 1979 as one of two underground schools in the Fort Worth ISD.

The school has gained attention as a winner of an Outstanding Adopt-A-School Partnership Award featured on Peter Jennings' "World New", and was also featured in the Boston Globe.
