Beyond FWSI-sponsored events, the Near Southside hosts many other special events throughout the year. Running events are among the most popular and attract thousands of visitors. In late February, the Cowtown Marathon runs through the district, coming from Downtown on S. Main then taking marathoners down Magnolia, through Fairmount, and out Park Place past the Cowtown Marathon offices.
In late March Joe’s Run benefitting Samaritan House on Hemphill is a 5K & 10K race that’s in its second decade. Joe’s Run attracts several thousand runners and spectators, with a start and finish at Magnolia Green and tables with treats from local restaurants for runners after they finish.
The newest race, the Rahr Oktoberfest 5k, quickly became a huge hit, perhaps because of the award-winning beer waiting at the finish line. The post-race festivities also include food trucks, live music, and a festive time for all.
The latest fitness themed event is the Mayor’s Southside Ride bike rally, moving from Downtown in 2012. The rally benefits the Police Bike Patrol Group and was formerly known as the Clean Air Bike Rally and the Bike the Bricks & Trails. As with Joe’s Run, it will start and finish at Magnolia Green and will be a family-friendly, leisurely ride through the Near Southside and surrounding neighborhoods, with 9-mile and 5-mile routes. Magnolia Green is also home to Broadway Baptist’s July “Broadway off Broadway” concerts, another excellent and free music series following in the footsteps of Friday on the Green.
Another neighborhood tradition is the annual Fairmount Home Tour, held each Mother’s Day weekend. Each tour features a new roster of historic homes and at least one newly constructed house. The Home Tour is a popular way to see the beauty of Fairmount’s historic homes up close, and equally as impressive is the dedication and passion of the homeowners that have maintained their homes so impressively.
