The Near Southside is home to a wide range of businesses and institutions that collectively employ close to 30,000 workers. Our employment base grows more diverse each year as entrepreneurs start new businesses here and outside firms choose new locations within the district.
In addition to these these upstarts, the growth of businesses that have been here for decades is a source of great community pride. Not long ago, disinvestment was the trend. In fact, in the early 1990s, the major hospitals were considering relocating their central facilities outside of the district. Fortunately their strong community ties compelled them to take steps that would greatly improve the Near Southside’s prospects, including the creation of FWSI. The collaboration and commitment of Near Southside leaders has been a driving force in the district’s turnaround.
Today the Near Southside is home to a world-class Medical District, dozens of other nationally known businesses, and an ever-growing collection of new firms. Creative firms are leading the way, choosing to locate here because the district’s urban energy and eclectic character make it a fun place to work. This migration of the “creative class” to the Near Southside is a testament to the hard work of community leaders to make the district a great place to live, work, and play.
For many in Fort Worth, the Near Southside has long been known as the Medical District, home to Tarrant County’s five major hospitals as well as dozens of independent medical clinics. The Near Southside is an eclectic and diverse mixed-use community and the second largest employment center in Tarrant County, with approximately 30,000 jobs. In addition to the major hospitals, the economic anchors for the district are major national and international businesses that continue to prosper and expand.
