ArtSouth is an innovative artist residency program offering studio space, a project stipend and public art exhibition space to selected artists. The program will offer these artists the unique opportunity to further experiment and expand, their studio art practice while directly engaging the Near Southside community. One artist will be selected each quarter to serve as the ArtSouth resident artist.

Selected artists will be invited to a month long studio residency that ends with a one month exhibition in a transparent exhibition space constructed from a shipping container. The selected artist will be commissioned to create a work of temporary public art and will be awarded a $4,000 stipend to complete the project. During each residency the temporary ArtSouth Exhibition Space will be located at different development parcel in the Near Southside and will serve to introduce the public to an area of the district that is in transition due to proposed or recent development projects. The ArtSouth projects will provide interactions for artists and local community members in an arts exchange through events and programs supporting temporary public art. The project will provide valuable public art experience to emerging public artists. The exhibitions will encourage developers and private property owners.
ArtSouth is specifically looking for artists who will engage the local community in a conversation through their work and studio practice. Artists are encouraged to submit a project proposal that, if selected, will utilize both the studio and exhibition experiences to initiate dialogue about the importance of community, art, or other matters related to the revitalization of the Near Southside.
ArtSouth artists will be selected by a selection committee comprised of local artists, property owners, and arts professionals who have an interest in bringing temporary public art to the Near Southside.
Artists working in all mediums are encouraged to apply when registration opens again in December 2015. There is no fee to apply. More details coming soon.

MEET THE #ArtSouth ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: Jay Wilkinson
The #ArtSouth Selection Committee was tasked with selecting one artist from many great and highly competitive proposals. This was a job that the committee took very seriously as they carefully deliberated to make a selection. It is with great excitement that we announce that Near Southside resident Jay Wilkinson will serve as our first ArtSouth resident artist.
Jay is an accomplished exhibition and studio artist often working with found objects to create large-scale sculptures that provoke conversation about social justice issues within our Fort Worth faces. In addition to his sculptural work, Jay has created several murals in the Near Southside and throughout Fort Worth. This year Jay co-curated two significant art shows in the Near Southside, Apples and Bobby on Drums. Other recent exhibitions include Exhibitionists, Sparkle Tunnel: Valentines, and The Nuisance Goes to Camp. He studied at Pratt Art Institute in Brooklyn, NY and University of North Texas in Denton. ARTSOUTH STUDIO
ArtSouth Studio space arrangements vary on a residency-by-residency basis and are subject to the availability and generosity of local property owners. Studio space can be located in a variety of locations in the Near Southside and are likely to be unoccupied buildings are seeking a tenant. A selection of a resident artist means that the artist will have access to the studio during the entire duration of the residency. The ArtSouth Studio has no equipment or furniture so any studio needs will be the responsibility of the artist. Simply put, the space is raw and provides electricity, water, and restroom facilities to the artist. ArtSouth Studios are to be used solely by the artist in residence and cannot be shared with others. The artist should use the studio for their ArtSouth project and should only conduct work related to ArtSouth in this space. Artists will be required to sign a studio lease agreement upon moving into the studio, which will outline the terms of the agreement. Studio spaces may offer an opportunity for public interaction via window viewing, should the artist wish.
The fall 2015 ArtSouth Studio will be located at 1109 W. Magnolia Avenue in a former restaurant space recently purchased by Will Churchill and Corrie Watson. The space is currently unoccupied as it awaits a retail tenant and has a fantastic set of street-facing windows that may be used by the artist to engage Magnolia Avenue pedestrians while working on the ArtSouth project. Since the studio cannot be opened to the public we strongly encourage artists to use these windows as a storyboard for your ArtSouth residency.
ARTSOUTH EXHIBITION SPACE
The ArtSouth Exhibition Space is a transparent temporary gallery space created from a 20’ x 8’ x 8’ shipping container. The artist may propose using the exhibition space in any way that they believe best serves their ArtSouth project, so long as it they do not make permanent modifications to the exhibition space. Art may be placed inside the space, outside the space or using a combination of both areas so long as it does not pose a public safety concern. At the end of the installation the artist will be required to return the exhibition space to Fort Worth South, Inc. in the same condition the received the space prior to their project. The interior walls and flooring will be white. Skylights and solar powered lighting will illuminate the space during both day and evening. Additional lighting or other modifications may be required for certain projects so we encourage you to detail those needs within your project proposal. Unfortunately the ArtSouth Exhibition Space does not provide any electricity to art installations needing power will need to find alternative solutions such as generators. Fort Worth South, Inc. will work closely with the artist to collaborate on any special requests. ArtSouth is a temporary space so artist should keep that in mind during the conception of the exhibition. The space is intentionally concise to reference the traveling nature of the project. Schematics for the exhibition space are available upon request.
The fall 2015 ArtSouth Exhibition Space will be located 1455 W. Magnolia Avenue. This vacant lot has recently been purchased by Hatfield Properties and Dodson Companies with the intent to build a mixed-use development that adds to the retail density and character of the Near Southside.
POST-EXHIBITION SALE OF COMMISSIONED WORKS
The artwork will be the property of Fort Worth South, Inc. In the event that the artwork is sold, ArtSouth will keep 50% of all sales to fund future ArtSouth projects. The remaining 50% will be awarded to the artist.
