New Institutional & Commercial Buildings

Over the last decade the Near Southside has seen consistent investment in hospital expansions as well as new clinics, offices and other commercial projects.  Our major hospitals have led the way: Baylor All Saints Medical Center, Cook Children’s Medical Center, JPS Health Network, Plaza Medical Center, and Texas Health Harris Methodist. Each of the hospitals has completed a transformative campus expansion within the last five years. These investments represent a remarkable accomplishment for the district.  Just twenty years ago, discussions focused not on expansions, but on moving the major hospitals out of the Near Southside.

While the hospitals are the largest contributors to the district’s employment base, there are also hundreds of independent clinics and offices, collectively providing a full range of healthcare and other services and bringing over 8,000 jobs. Investment in new commercial projects remains strong. A district tour shows how new buildings are designed to complement the urban character of their historic neighbors.  Since the 2008 enactment of the Near Southside Development Standards and Guidelines, we have seen virtually every type of commercial project constructed in accordance with the code. These new projects demonstrate how timeless design is always a great fit.
