Watts Park is the first public neighborhood park to be constructed in the Near Southside since the early 20th century. The park is in the historic Leuda/May/St. Louis district and was originally called West Leuda Park. The park’s new name, Watts Park, honors one of FWSI’s most influential leaders and a true champion of the Near Southside’s revitalization: Dr. James Watts.
Dr. Watts was instrumental in bringing together the City of Fort Worth, the major hospitals, local businesses, and neighborhood residents to work toward a common vision for the Near Southside. A key component of that vision was the development of inviting community spaces such as parks and plazas. Watts Park is a fitting tribute to a wonderful community leader and a highly regarded physician. Dr. Watts passed away in 2004 and is survived by his wife Linda, who is also heavily involved in community efforts and remains closely connected with Fort Worth South.
Watts Park was designed by Larry O’Flinn from Dunaway Associates in cooperation with FWSI, the City of Fort Worth, and neighborhood residents. SPSD Inc. constructed the park.
