Executive Director Craig Schaefer says that asbestos remediation will be done in April while the serious demo and reconstruction of interior walls will begin in May. Cancer Care is currently located at 605 W. Magnolia.
Schaumburg Lofts - Architect Ken Schaumburg and developer Robert McKenzie-Smith have joined forces to develop an eight-unit, for-purchase, two and three story townhouse project, each with a two-car garage, near the intersection of Daggett and College. The project was profiled on the front page of the March 22 issue of the Fort Worth Business Press, and will be the first townhouse project in the District. The development will include space for a design studio for the five-employee architectural firm, Schaumburg Architects, with adjacent living space for the architect. The units will sell for $190,000 to $290,000. One of Kens most recent design projects was the three-story Cassidy Corners townhomes at 201Pecan Street, just east of City Center towers. He currently lives at the Houston Lofts and offices at 409 W. Vickery, but this will change. Groundbreaking is scheduled for May 1. Phone 336-7077.
Jacob Banks - Attorney Jake Banks has purchased the retail building at 1706 Eighth Ave.(west side of 8th north of Park Place), and is remodeling one of the four adjacent retail spaces for his law office. The building is currently occupied by the Foot Relief Shop, Gails Gift Shop, and AA. Jake will occupy the fourth suite. There are now 34 law firms in the district.
Guinn - Funds have been finally raised from public sources to complete the renovation of the old gymnasium and shop buildings on the former James Guinn school campus at Rosedale and I-30. The newly remodeled space will become home for the private, non-profit corporation, Fort Worth Medical & Technology Business Incubator (MedTech Center). Construction is to begin as soon as the bid process is complete. Expect an 18 to 24 month construction period.
Arts on Broadway - Beth El - There are folks interested in establishing a neighborhood cultural arts center at the former temple building, which is now owned by the FW ISD, and is available for purchase. This would be a great addition to the neighborhood, and is in keeping with the Citys Comprehensive Plan regarding expanding citizen exposure to the arts. The effort is now identifying potential tenants. This comes at a time when there is similar discussions about the reuse of the current Modern Art Museum.
Spring Gallery Night - April 6 - Designer's Resource Studio will present the works of Patricia Nix and Debbie Little Wilson, and Chuck Stovall's Alpine Studio will display the Collective photographic works from the six members of "F.8". Both galleries are located on Park Place at Eighth Avenue, and will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday evening.
Cain Electrical Supply - The long vacant 20,000 sf warehouse style building at 108 Industrial Avenue has been purchased by Cain Electrical. Cain is headquartered in Spring, Texas. They have 10 other locations in West Texas, but this is their first outlet in the DFW area. They were attracted to the site by its central location and the neighborhood's commitment to continue improving the area. They plan to enhance the appearance of the building and the adjacent property.
Board of Directors and Membership Meeting - Join us on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at 4:00 p.m., rm 302, at Broadway Baptist, 305 W. Broadway. This is the quarterly meeting of FWSs 36 member Board of Directors. All 226 FWS members and others interested in the revitalization initiative are invited to join us. The agenda will include an update on the following: TIF reimbursement, Magnolia Green, Gateway Center, Oleander Walk, Evans at Rosedale, mixed-use zoning, design guidelines, and the NEZ incentives
Development Committee - This 14-member FWS committee meets monthly to provide direction on many development issues important to the revitalization effort. The group brings a mix of skill sets to the discussions. Three new members to the committee are architect Robert Kelly, attorney Art Brender and residential developer John Giordano. The other members are developer Ray Boothe, retailer Earl Cox, banker Bruce Davis, physician John Freese, general contractor Jim Hasenzahl, realtor Joan Kline, manufacturer David Motheral, property owner Carol Stanford, and property manager Cheryl White - a quality and very diverse group of volunteers.
Partner's Breakfast - FWS members and their guests will get together at 8:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 3 at the Old Fire Station #5, 503 Bryan (east of Main, north of Hattie Street). The property is owned by FWS member Bob Higginbotham, and is available for lease. All FWS members and guests are welcome to join us at this monthly networking event. Kline & Co. will be our host.
Pools? - There are currently two operating indoor swimming pools in FWS. Panther Boys & Girls Club at 1500 Hemphill has a 75-foot by 35-foot pool (5 to 14 ft deep). Carter Rehab & Fitness Center on the Baylor All Saints campus has a 50 ft by 24 ft pool (5 ft deep). An olympic sized indoor pool at Broadway Baptist Church was eliminated in 1990 during an expansion project. The pool on the 1st floor of the College Avenue Baptist Church education building was covered up with a wooden floor that Bruce Wood Dance Company used until recently as rehearsal space. The dance company will likely move to the ONeal Furniture bldg on Jennings.
Evans Avenue RFP - The City will soon issue a request for proposal for the development of their 25 acre property located between Evans and I-35, north of Rosedale. The City wants to reach agreement with a master developer to create a mixed-use village consisting of new retail, residential and office uses. FWS has worked with City staff and other neighborhood organizations to redesign the street and encourage the redevelopment of the corridor. SRO Construction has been selected by the City to rebuild the street between Rosedale and Terrell. The work is to begin in late April and will cost about $2 million. The work includes the creation of a large plaza at the intersection of Pulaski and Evans for future outdoor community events. Pulaski will be vacated west of Evans.
