The City and The T joined together to study the feasibility of light rail in 2001.
The plan completed in 2002 by local engineering firm Carter & Burgess proposed a central city modern streetcar system, as well as an extension of the Trinity Railway Express commuter rail line into southwest Fort Worth.
The light rail portion of the study's Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) plan was put on hold shortly after the plan's completion as the City Council decided to focus exclusively on commuter rail. In early 2008 the Central City Committee produced a report requesting that the City resume discussions of a modern streetcar system.
